So, I have just about the right amount of fear when it comes to rappelling. I climbed up to the roof of the silos today to rappel off the edge and down onto a climb that had been stripped of holds for painting but we needed to plug the bolt holes.
I dutifully attached my self-belay device. I hooked my anchors into the bolts atop the building. With rope in hand, I rolled over the edge and found the wall with my feet. But now the problem... I had nothing to put my feet onto/into so that I could unweight the protection I had secured. The slack in the rope I was supposed to descend was taken up all the way to the knot and I could not unhook myself from the anchors.
At least I was safe!
I ended up tying some knots in the rope and Jeff and Skinny then grabbed my feet once I stepped up so that I could roll back onto the roof. That was it. I was done and going back down the ladder.
I can tell you the descending the ladder (inside the chutes) was actually way worse than the rappelling would have been. However, it was safer at that moment because the adrenaline had my hand shaking like the San Andreas fault.
I was never really in any danger... but I accomplished nothing except giving Jeff a reason to get on top of the silos.
It's was a quick four hours. But in the end, I feel really, really silly!
