I had such a blast on Saturday. SUCH A BLAST!!!
I got there at noonish (there being Bar H, which is my home away from home) and set the first part of the course for the Boondoggle by myself with three dogs in tow. The trail went up Horseshoe and then back up Tough Breaks.
I found the part of Tough Breaks that burned. It was less than a 1/4 mile and the trail itself was not affected... just some rust and brown trees along the downhill slope.
Then, when I got back, Laurie Underwood was there. We set off on the Oaks and Armadillo Flats to put the second half of the Figure 8 together.
Laurie got two miniature donkeys and a pregnant standard donkey for her birthday, so I got to hear all about donkey breeds, donkey personalities, donkey care and donkey foibles. We quickly got on to Gardening and restoring old cars. I am excited to meet the donkey's. I think I'll just invite myself up for a run sometime soon and bring the donkeys some chocolate chip cookies. It's an inside joke... but Laurie will understand.
Returning to Ground Zero, Steve Hall had arrived and was putting up his tent. I set up the aid station and promptly began checking people in. We had plenty of help to get the Water and Gatorade set up.... and chips, pretzels, crackers, cookies and M&Ms to share. Once everyone was off on trail, I got a sandwich (5 p.m. is a great time for lunch, isn't it?) and the first runner was through the top of the first in 24 minutes... WOW!
We had a steady stream of folks the rest of the night, and around 9:30ish p.m. I finally grilled my pork steaks.
Good friends sat around the camp fire until the last of the runners had finished up and were hanging about with us.
Denise and Bryan showed up at about 8:30 p.m. and brought me beer. And friendship. We had a fantastic time recalling all the craziness that ensues when you get a bunch of us together and add a lot of really good exercise and fresh air.
Letha and Mark and Deborah all spent the night with the four of use"Campers." And we all aw0ke to rain.
Still, coffee, bacon, eggs and tater tots were served and we stuffed all our wet stuff back in the car and headed back to town.
This is the last scheduled trip to Bar H for a while. And I'm still trying to get the smoke out of the clothes, blankets, tent, etc.
Anyway, I was in a much better mood having successfully navigated this race than I was going in, which is another really good reason to exercise daily.

Speaking of which, this week's exercise plan includes three days at the gym, running and lifting weights, one day in the Climbing Gym (Denise is going to New Orleans Thursday so there won't be two nights of climbing) and then a drive to Palo Duro, where I will get a run in on the trails before the Memorial Service for Red begins.

Tomorrow: Antje fixes the dishwasher and the garbage disposal.
